Spring Conference traditionally focuses on medical management and disability prevention in workers' compensation, and this year's program dives into the hot topics in collaborative care, integrated practice, and the Department's ambitious Healthy Worker 2020 initiative. We'll focus some time on handling troubling hand and wrist injuries, learn from the UW COHE about accident prevention, and focus the afternoon on current events in workers' comp public policy. Interact directly with the Department of Labor & Industries' Medical Director on the latest approaches and outcomes comprising the Department's Healthy Worker 2020 initiative.

- Evolution of the Collaborative Care Model in Workers' Comp with Dr. Dianna Chamblin

Dr. Dianna Chamblin of the Everett Clinic will update attendees on best practices and takeaways from her longtime practice in collaborative care an an integrated practice setting. How can we drive the best health outcomes for our workers?

- Injury Focus: Repetitive motion conditions of the hand and wrist with Dr. Roger Blauvelt

MultiCare orthopedic surgeon Dr. Roger Blauvelt will cover several repetitive motion injuries of the upper extremities, what they are and are not, types of injuries and the risk factors that can lead to them. Attendees will become very familiar with the signs, symptoms, treatment options and outcomes of these conditions as well as the common tests and terminology associated with them, as well as how they may be caused by work-related injuries.

- A Prescription for Success - A Case Study in Accident Prevention with Dr. Debra Milek

Sharing take-home tips applicable to any jobsite, Dr. Debra Milek, Medical Director of the Occupational and Environmental Medicine practice at Harborview Medical Center and its COHE, will present a great turnaround story based on a collaboration between the University of Washington's Environmental Health & Safety division and its Facilities Building Services Division that increased safety and diminished accidents in the university's custodial workforce.

- Panel Discussion: Policy and Regulation of IMEs in Washington

The Independent Medical Exam is a key part of the workers' compensation system but has drawn considerable controversy of late, especially in the Legislature. Interact with an expert panel including Self-Insurance Ombuds Donna Egeland, IME Coalition representative Carolyn Logue, and Lloyd Brooks from WSIA, to understand what is going on in IME regulation, what may be coming, and what is being done to improve IME delivery.

- Panel Discussion: Financial Risk Management for Self-Insureds

Calculating pension reserves; coming up with investment assumptions for investing pension assets; the future of Second Injury Fund utilization and rates; and costs and assessments on self-insureds. We will simplify this complex area and explore the cost-drivers in a panel discussion moderated by WSIA's Kris Tefft and including self-insurance management and actuarial staff from Labor & Industries, and attorney Shawna Fruin of Reinisch Wilson Weier. 

- 2018 Legislative Wrap-Up with Kris Tefft

The 2018 session of the Washington State Legislature should wrap up on March 8th. With over 25 bills in consideration impacting workers' compensation, learn what was considered, what was passed into law, and how to plan for compliance with any new requirements.

Cancellation Information

A cancellation fee of $75 will be charged for cancellations received by March 16, 2018.  This is to offset the cost of room rental, reserved meals, and conference material production.

No credit will be given for cancellations made after March 16, 2018.
