In 1998 JLARC conducted a performance audit of the worker's compensation system in Washington State. There were a number of significant findings, and a number of significant recommendations for changes to the system. Some have been implemented, many have not.

In 2003 JLARC conducted follow-up to their 1998 performance audit of the worker's compensation system in Washington State. A number of items were implemented from the recommendations of the 1998 audit, but most/many have still not been implemented. The employer community was generally disappointed with the lack of accountability for implementing the 1998 recommended system changes.

Department of Labor & Industries Audits
In addition to the JLARC performance audit (1998), the Department of Labor & Industries was audited by the State Auditor's Office and outside auditors, at the request of the employer community thru a legislative appropriation. Two audits were performed. One audit addressed actuarial issues in terms of proper reserving and the assumptions used in rate setting. The other audit addressed the financial condition of the Department's workers' compensation funds - Accident Fund, Medical Aid Fund, Supplemental Pension Fund, and others.
