What This Program is About
This presentation will describe how a Physical Medicine Physician, with a subspecialty in Spine and Spinal Cord Injury Medicine, approaches common industrial injuries that may injure the spine and/or the spinal cord. You will learn how to distinguish between spine, spinal cord, and nerve root injuries. Specialized approaches to history gathering and physical examination that distinguish these injuries will be discussed. Clinical “pearls” will be provided that will allow you to identify which imaging studies, diagnostic tests, and treatment modalities do and do not have documented efficacy for common injury-related conditions. Key evidence-based reviews and treatment guidelines supporting these “pearls” will be identified and provided. At the conclusion of the presentation, the participants will be able to apply evidence-based guidelines to ensure that Washington workers who sustain spine and spinal cord injuries are provided with the most effective diagnostic and treatment modalities.
